Part 7 · IT System Upgrade Notice E-mail
Questions 6-8 refer to the following e-mail.
To: All Rivertown Office Employees From: IT Department Subject: Network System Upgrade
Beginning September 2, the company's internal network will be upgraded to improve overall system speed. The upgrade is expected to take two days, during which employees may experience limited access to shared drives.
Employees who need to access shared files during this period should save copies to their local computers in advance. The IT Help Desk will remain available by phone, but on-site support will be limited. A temporary support desk will therefore be set up in the second-floor lobby for employees who need immediate assistance. Employees may drop by without an appointment.
Before logging in after the upgrade, employees are asked to reset their passwords through the new employee portal. Instructions for resetting passwords will be sent by e-mail on September 8.

Answers appear after you submit
| No. | Correct answer | Point tested | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | B · before | Time preposition + gerund | "before + doing" (before doing something) shows sequence; "beside/during/among" all fail on meaning or usage. |
| 2 | A · accurately | Adverb modifying a verb | When "more" modifies a verb phrase, it needs the adverb "accurately"; "accuracy/accuracies" are nouns and "accurate" is an adjective. |
| 3 | A · lead | Verb collocation | "lead a training session" (to run a training session) is a fixed collocation; "reserve/recruit/manufacture" cannot take "session" as an object. |
| 4 | B · unless | Conjunction distinction | "unless" is a conjunction meaning "except if" and introduces a conditional clause; "despite" is a preposition and cannot take a full clause, while "whereas/therefore" don't fit the meaning. |
| 5 | C · noticeably | Adverb collocation | "remain noticeably high" reads naturally; "closely/shortly/nearly" don't logically modify "high" here. |
| 6 | A · The network will be upgraded. | Reason detail question | Corresponds to "...the company's internal network will be upgraded..., during which employees may experience limited access to shared drives." |
| 7 | C · Visit the temporary support desk | Detail question · procedure | Corresponds to "A temporary support desk will ... be set up in the second-floor lobby for employees who need immediate assistance." |
| 8 | B · Password reset instructions will be sent. | Detail question · dates | Corresponds to "Instructions for resetting passwords will be sent by e-mail on September 8." |

06 Answer techniques
Part 5 + 7 · 6 tips
- 01Time preposition/conjunction + gerund or clause
before/after/until can act as a preposition (followed by a gerund, as in this question's "before requesting reimbursement") or as a conjunction (followed by a full subject-verb clause, as in "before he arrives") — judge by what it actually introduces in the sentence, not by a fixed rule.
- 02Adverbs modifying verbs/adjectives
Use an adverb after "more" + verb phrase (assign shifts more accurately); use an adjective only when "more" precedes a noun.
- 03Verb + noun collocations
Memorize "lead a session," "submit a report," "assign a shift" as whole phrases.
- 04Conjunctions vs. prepositions
"unless/whereas" are conjunctions followed by a full subject-verb clause; "despite/during" are prepositions followed by a noun or gerund, not a clause.
- 05Spot the question's keyword first, then locate it in the passage
"Why" questions usually map to a reason clause in the passage (while / because / due to); "what should/must do" questions map to an imperative or a must/should instruction.
- 06Watch for multiple dates/times in the passage
The passage has two different dates — 9/2 (upgrade starts) and 9/8 (password-reset instructions sent). Match each question to the correct one precisely and don't mix them up.
