Part 7 · Invoice Discount Correction Email
Questions 6-8 refer to the following e-mail.
To: Accounts Department From: Daniel Cho, Purchasing Manager Subject: Invoice 7842—Correction Required
We received invoice 7842 for the office furniture delivered on August 17. The quantities shown on the invoice are correct, but the 12 percent volume discount specified in our purchase agreement was not applied.
Please issue a revised invoice by August 27 so that payment can be included in this month's processing cycle. Invoices received after that date will not be processed until September 15. There is no need to resend the delivery documents, as we have already confirmed that all 45 desks arrived undamaged.
For reference, I have attached the relevant page of the purchase agreement. Please contact me if any further information is needed.

| No. | Correct answer | Point tested | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A · assessed | Verb collocation | "assess the financial implications" fits both meaning and collocation; "appoint" (to name to a position), "enclose" (to attach), and "undertake" (to take on, usually a task rather than "implications") all fail to fit. |
| 2 | B · than | Fixed expression | "no later than + time" (not later than…) is a fixed expression — memorize it as a whole. |
| 3 | A · unauthorized | Fixed expression | "unauthorized access" is a high-frequency fixed expression in information security; "unoccupied," "unavailable," and "unfinished" all fail to fit the meaning. |
| 4 | C · Prompted | Past participle as an adverbial | The subject "the manufacturer" is the one being prompted, so the passive past participle is needed: "Prompted by unexpectedly high demand"; "Prompting" expresses an active sense that doesn't match the logical subject. |
| 5 | A · provided that | Conditional conjunction | "provided that" (as long as) introduces a conditional adverbial clause and fits the meaning; "even though" (concession), "as though" (comparison), and "in case of" (followed by a noun phrase, not a clause) all fail to fit. |
| 6 | C · An agreed discount is missing. | Detail question | Corresponds to "...the 12 percent volume discount...was not applied." |
| 7 | B · Payment will be delayed until September. | Detail question | Corresponds to "Invoices received after that date will not be processed until September 15." |
| 8 | A · Part of the purchase agreement | Detail question | Corresponds to "I have attached the relevant page of the purchase agreement." |

06 Answer techniques
Part 5 + 7 · 4 tips
- 01Judge by both verb meaning and collocation object
"assess" is frequently followed by abstract nouns like "implications/risk/situation." "Appoint/enclose/undertake" are also common verbs, but they take different objects — judge by the object in context.
- 02Memorize fixed phrases as a whole
Phrases like "no later than" and "prevent unauthorized access to" should be memorized as whole units, not judged word by word.
- 03Past participle as an adverbial expressing the passive
The logical subject of a sentence-initial participial phrase is the sentence's subject; use the past participle (Prompted/Affected/Encouraged) when the subject is being acted upon, and the present participle only when the subject actively performs the action.
- 04Distinguishing conditional conjunctions
"provided that" (condition), "even though" (concession), "as though" (comparison), and "in case of" (followed by a noun phrase, not a clause) differ in both grammar and meaning — choose based on sentence meaning and what follows.
