Part 7 · Fire-Safety Inspection Notice
Questions 6-8 refer to the following e-mail.
To: Tenants of Meridian Business Center From: Property Management Subject: Fire-Safety Inspection
The annual fire-safety inspection of Meridian Business Center will take place on September 22. Inspectors will test alarms in all common areas between 8:00 A.M. and 10:00 A.M. Brief periods of loud noise should therefore be expected.
Beginning at 10:30 A.M., inspectors will visit individual offices to check emergency exits and fire extinguishers. Each company must arrange for an employee to provide access. Tenants that cannot accommodate an inspection that day should contact Property Management by September 17 to request an alternative appointment.
Please ensure that corridors and emergency exits are unobstructed. Any items found blocking these areas will be removed temporarily and may be collected from the basement storage office after the inspection.

| No. | Correct answer | Point tested | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A · subject | Fixed collocation | "be subject to" (liable to change, bound by) is a high-frequency fixed phrase for saying prices or terms may change. "liable" (prone to a bad outcome, e.g. "liable to break") doesn't fit; "relevant" / "dependent" also take different prepositions (relevant to / dependent on). |
| 2 | B · collected | Past participle as a post-nominal modifier | "data collected from all twelve regional offices" = data that was collected...; the past participle is passive and modifies the preceding noun "data." "collecting" (present participle, active), "collection" (noun), and "collects" (finite verb) cannot serve as a post-nominal modifier. |
| 3 | C · than | Fixed inversion structure | "No sooner had + subject + past participle ... than + clause" is a fixed inverted structure meaning "as soon as." "when," "then," and "while" cannot pair with "no sooner." |
| 4 | A · feasible | Adjective meaning discrimination | "financially and technically feasible" fits the context. "eligible" (qualified, usually of people), "proficient" (skilled, of abilities), and "consecutive" (successive, of counts or periods) all fail to fit. |
| 5 | A · rather than | Parallel structure | "rather than" links two parallel bare infinitives (upgrade... rather than construct...), meaning "instead of." "as long as" (provided that, takes a clause), "owing to" (because of, takes a noun), and "apart from" (except for, takes a noun) cannot link two bare infinitives. |
| 6 | B · Loud sounds from alarm testing | Detail question | Corresponds to "Inspectors will test alarms... Brief periods of loud noise should therefore be expected." Option C (entering individual offices) happens after 10:30 A.M., not early. |
| 7 | A · An employee who can admit the inspectors | Detail question | Corresponds to "Each company must arrange for an employee to provide access." |
| 8 | C · They may be moved to another location. | Inference question | Corresponds to "Any items found blocking these areas will be removed temporarily and may be collected from the basement storage office..." — "removed temporarily" plus "may be collected from the basement" implies the items are moved elsewhere, not permanently discarded. |

06 Answer techniques
Part 5 + 7 · 6 tips
- 01"be subject to" vs. "be liable to"
"be subject to" means "may change / is bound by" and is used for neutral statements about prices, terms, etc. "be liable to" stresses "prone to a bad outcome," as in "liable to break" — a different nuance.
- 02A post-nominal past participle is passive
In "data collected from...," "collected" is a past participle meaning "that was collected," modifying the preceding noun — a high-frequency TOEIC Part 5 point.
- 03The fixed inversion "No sooner...than..."
When "No sooner" is fronted, the main clause is partially inverted (had + subject + past participle) and the following clause is introduced by "than" — it cannot be swapped for "when/then/while."
- 04Discriminate adjective meanings by what they modify
"feasible" modifies plans (workable), "eligible" modifies people (qualified), "proficient" modifies skills (skilled), and "consecutive" modifies counts or periods (successive).
- 05"rather than" links parallel structures
The two sides of "rather than" must match in part of speech and form — here it links the bare infinitives "upgrade" and "construct."
- 06Reading: locate details via signal words, infer from softened wording
"therefore" ("...should therefore be expected") links cause and effect and flags detail questions. "must arrange for..." maps to "what must be arranged" questions. For inference questions, watch softened wording — "removed temporarily...may be collected..." never says "returned," but "temporarily" and "may be collected" are enough to infer the items are not permanently discarded.
