Part 7 · Archived-Records Relocation Notice
Questions 6-8 refer to the following notice.
Relocation of Archived Records
Physical records currently stored at the Harbor facility will be transferred to the new Ridgeway Records Center between November 2 and November 6. Boxes requested after October 30 may not be delivered until November 9. Access to documents in the company's digital archive will not be affected.
Departments that expect to need physical records for an audit or legal matter during the relocation should submit their requests by October 28. Such requests must be marked "urgent" and include the date by which the records should be returned to storage. Up to 200 pages may be scanned at no charge; standard scanning fees will apply beyond that limit.
After the relocation, employees will continue to request records through the existing online portal. However, the daily cutoff for next-business-day delivery will change from 3:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. Requests submitted later will generally be delivered within two business days. Employees must show their identification cards when receiving record boxes.

| No. | Correct answer | Point tested | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A · reservations | Noun-meaning discrimination | "express reservations about something" (to voice doubts or misgivings) is a fixed collocation. "permissions," "contributions," and "provisions" cannot combine with "express" to convey "doubts." |
| 2 | B · Had | Inverted subjunctive conditional | Fronting "Had" is equivalent to "If the supplier had notified us earlier" and expresses a hypothesis contrary to past fact ("if only the supplier had told us sooner"), matching "could have arranged" in the main clause. "Should" is used for inverted future hypotheticals; "Unless" and "Whether" cannot be inverted this way to express a past unreal condition. |
| 3 | A · impartial | Adjective-meaning discrimination | "impartial" (fair, unbiased) commonly pairs with investigation- or assessment-type nouns and fits the context of "avoiding a conflict of interest." "implicit," "impaired," and "imposing" do not fit the meaning; watch the four look-alike "im-" words. |
| 4 | C · force | Fixed prepositional-phrase collocation | "remain in force" (to stay valid, in effect) is an idiomatic collocation used for contract and regulatory clauses. "in charge," "in practice," and "in operation" do not fit the sense of "the contract stays valid." |
| 5 | B · can the company | Partial inversion triggered by "Only by" | When an adverbial of means beginning with "Only by" is fronted, the main clause takes partial inversion, placing the auxiliary before the subject: "can the company." The non-inverted (A) and (C), and (D) with its mismatched tense (past perfect against the present-tense context), are all wrong. |
| 6 | B · To obtain records needed during the relocation | Reason detail question | Corresponds to "Departments that expect to need physical records for an audit or legal matter during the relocation should submit their requests by October 28." The early request ensures the department can still get the physical records it needs during the move. |
| 7 | C · The method for submitting requests | Change-versus-no-change contrast question | Corresponds to "employees will continue to request records through the existing online portal." The submission method (the online portal) does not change, whereas the facility location (Harbor to Ridgeway) and the next-business-day cutoff (3:00 to 1:00) both do. (D) misapplies a detail — showing ID is required when collecting physical record boxes, not for digital files. |
| 8 | D · It will generally arrive within two business days. | Time-rule inference question | The new next-business-day cutoff is 1:00 P.M., so a 2:00 P.M. submission is past that day's cutoff and falls under "Requests submitted later will generally be delivered within two business days." Do not assume it arrives the same day or is canceled automatically. |

06 Answer techniques
Part 5 + 7 · 6 tips
- 01"reservations" meaning discrimination
"express reservations about something" (to voice doubts or misgivings) is a fixed phrase. "permissions," "contributions," and "provisions" cannot combine with "express" to mean "doubts."
- 02Inverted subjunctive conditional with "Had"
Expresses a hypothesis contrary to past fact ("if only ... had ..., ... would/could have ..."). Fronting "Had" drops "if" and equals "If ... had done," matching "would/could have done" in the main clause. "Should" is for inverted future hypotheticals; "Unless" and "Whether" cannot be used this way.
- 03"impartial" meaning discrimination
Means "fair, unbiased" and pairs with investigation/assessment nouns, fitting an "avoid a conflict of interest" context. "implicit," "impaired," and "imposing" do not fit; watch the four look-alike "im-" words.
- 04The fixed phrase "remain in force"
Means a contract or regulation "stays valid, in effect" — an idiomatic collocation. "in charge," "in practice," and "in operation" do not fit "the contract stays valid."
- 05Partial inversion after "Only by ..."
When "Only by" + an adverbial of means is fronted, the main clause takes partial inversion: the auxiliary or modal moves before the subject ("can the company"). Rule out options that aren't inverted or don't match the tense ("could the company have" — past perfect clashes with the present-tense context).
- 06Reading: locating cause-and-effect, contrasting change with no-change, and working out a time rule
Q6: identify the reason before "should submit ... by October 28" — physical records are still needed during the move. Q7: separate what changes (facility location, next-business-day cutoff) from what stays the same (requesting via the online portal), and beware the mismatch in (D). Q8: work from the new 1:00 P.M. cutoff — a 2:00 P.M. request is late, so it falls under "delivered within two business days"; don't assume.
